Made in Chicago with Mexican Roots.

About the Design:

As a first-generation son of immigrants from Durango and Zacatecas, I’ve always been proud of my Mexican roots. Learning about my ancestry has taken a pivotal role in my life, and it’s shaping how I see the world today. Lately, this curiosity has led me to learn about the history of pre-Columbian Mexico leading up to its independence from the Spanish Empire in the early 1800s. In 2024, my wife and I traveled to the state of Guanajuato, where Mexico’s independence movement began in 1810 led by Miguel Hidalgo. We visited many sites, including the historic Alhóndiga de Granaditas museum in the city of Guanajuato. According to history, this old grain storage building was originally built and controlled by the Spanish Empire, but was overtaken by the Mexican insurgents in the first battle of the long campaign.  Its capture became their first victory in the war for independence. However, the Spanish regained control of the building and held on to it until they finally lost the war against the Mexicans in 1821.

The image on this limited edition shirt is a replica of an original painting found inside one of the walls of this historic building. The painting labels itself as the “insurgents’ first seal” and remains there today (see photo 1.1) for visitors to observe. Who actually painted this image is unknown, but what we do know is that it became a symbol of freedom and liberty for the insurgents who fought for their independence.

This Mexican Independence Day wear your Cultura, honor your history, and make your abuelitos proud. Thanks for supporting local artists and small businesses.

Viva Mexico!
